Tooth Coloured Composite Fillings
Advantages of Tooth Coloured Composite Fillings
A very popular choice amongst patients as its natural appearance matches the colour of your teeth. This is a great option for those who are self-conscious of the way their teeth look with fillings as they blend into the tooth making them practically invisible.
Disadvantages of Tooth Coloured Composite Fillings
Unfortunately, beauty does come at the expense of strength here. The coloured composite filling is less durable than other options. This type of filling is also not ideal for larger sized cavities due to their durability.
In terms of expense, this type of cavity is also more expensive as it takes more time to fit.
Porcelain Dental Fillings (Ceramic)

Just like composite fillings, these could be designed to match your teeth and give them a great natural look. This is a great option for big cavities as the larger a porcelain dental fillings are, the stronger it becomes.
Disadvantages of Porcelain Dental Fillings
This type of filling is very brittle, so it’s not ideal for smaller sized cavities. This type of filling usually covers most of the tooth and hence makes it a more expensive option compared to other filling options.
Silver Dental Fillings (Amalgam)
Advantages of Silver Dental Fillings
The most common type of dental fillings and for good reason. Silver dental fillings are very resistant to wear and tear, which means they can last up to several decades. These types of fillings also do not break the bank and require much fewer visits to get done.
Disadvantages of Silver Dental Fillings
This type is the most noticeable of the fillings. It has a dark colour that stands out from your white teeth and is easily noticeable. This is why we usually do not use these for the highly visible areas of your mouth.
Gold Dental Fillings
Advantages of Gold Dental Fillings
Durability is not an issue with gold tooth fillings as they can last more than 20 years without a need to replace them.
This filling is very visible as it does not match the colour of your teeth unless you’ve decided to replace your pearly whites with gold plated teeth, which makes it stand out. This is sometimes seen as a positive or negative really so I’ll leave it up to you to decide
Disadvantages of Gold Dental Fillings
The durability does come at a cost, which is unfortunately beyond what most patients can afford for a filling. If you factor in how long these fillings last it could be a worthwhile investment, but it is a large payment nonetheless so many patients opt away from this option.
